Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What are group expectations?

Be open to creating queer community.

Be respectful of other opinions and experiences about the book.

Be kind enough to listen, generous enough to give space to others, and courageous enough to share.

Be specific! Proactively find passages and questions for the group to discuss.

Try and buy the book from PAT @ Giovanni’s Room to support queer authors and queer bookstores.

When and where do we meet?

We meet at Philly AIDS Thrift at Giovanni’s Room (345 S 12th St, Phila. Pa), the longest-running queer bookstore in the country.

Meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. They typically run between 1-1.5 hours.

You don’t need to register or RSVP but responding to the pre-meeting headcount survey is very helpful for planning.

What happens during a meeting?

During meetings, you’ll meet new folks, have some chats in small and large groups, and build some queer community. If you don’t know where to start, we post discussion questions before to give you inspiration. Everyone’s also asked to share one word about the book. We’ll also discuss future selections, and you’ll have a chance to buy next month’s book. If you’re comfortable, after the meeting, we encourage people to continue convivial chats at a local bar.

Should I read the book before?

Yes! It’s a book club! If you haven’t read the book, it’ll be pretty difficult to participate in discussion about it (at least without annoying the people who did the reading). Books are posted two months out so you can get a head-start on the next month.

However, if you’re almost done or made some significant progress, definitely come! Just don’t be annoyed by spoilers.

How can I find more info?

Following this account will provide nearly all information you need. However, be sure to join our email list which has more detailed information. A sign-up form is linked in the bio. We occasionally get discounts and invites to queer events, shows, and organizations in the city and you won’t want to miss out.
